The North Dakota Library Association’s 2017 Annual Conference is an opportunity for people from all types of libraries across the state and region to come together to share ideas, get inspired, and connect with each other. It’s our way of continuing to transform our libraries and ourselves.

A block of rooms has been set aside for NDLA conference attendees at the government rate of $89 per night plus related taxes. Reservations must be made before September 3, 2017.

 All rooms have high-speed internet access (wireless and data port), flat-screen TV’s with premium cable, coffee maker, hair dryer, iron and board, and small refrigerator.

 There are also several bars and restaurants located inside the Canad Inn, including ‘l Bistro Mediterranean Eatery, Aaltos Restaurant, Garbonzo’s Pizza, Tavern United, Playmakers Gaming Lounge, Splashers Water Park, and an arcade.



 Members of the Minnesota Library Association, the South Dakota Library Association, and the Wyoming Library Association may register at NDLA member rates.

NDLA’s Got Talent!!! 
And the NDLA Conference is the time to show off yours!!!!
The NDLA Talent Show will be held the evening of Thursday, October 5, 2017 following the banquet and live auction. We look forward to seeing a variety of talents from our very talented members.  The sky is the limit:  Magical acts, stand-up comedy, comedy skit, dance, instrumental or vocal performance (solo or group), gymnastics, juggling, or an unspecified or unusual talent.  Solo and group performances are welcome!

Silent Auction!

Calling all NDLAers! The Auction Subcommittee  needs your help and we’re not too proud to beg. We are going to have three auctions this year: Facebook, Live and Silent and we need you to donate and to bid.
We have a nice assortment of items that have been donated but definitely need more items to auction off. Be creative! Think outside the book! Some of the donated items include: homemade cookies to be mailed at Christmas time, homemade Library Lady Lefsa, a genealogy search, a beautiful quilt, knitted items and paintings. Now you’re probably thinking “well I’m not crafty enough”. That’s okay! We will gladly accept more traditional “auction baskets” so the sky is really the limit.
Here’s some important dates to keep in mind:
August 1:Please send pictures and a description of your donated item(s) to Mary Soucie at [email protected]
September 17-30: Facebook Auction- like NDLA on Facebook to be able to bid
October 6: All payments for the Facebook Auction are due. Payment will be accepted at the conference
October 11:  Sellers will be notified of who the winning bidder is that they should send the item to
A few more tidbits you need to know:
§  We are asking the donors of items for the Facebook auction to mail the item to the winning bidder
§  Items for the silent and live auction can be dropped off at the registration table at conference.
§  We would like pictures and descriptions of all items being donated so the committee can plan for what will be in each auction

The North Dakota Library Association Invites You...

What: Author Alley: an exhibit and book sale featuring local and regional authors during their annual conference.

When:  October 5, 2017

  • Set-up 8:00 - 9:00 am
  • Exhibits & Author Alley Grand Opening 9:15 - 9:45 am
  • Exhibits & Author Alley are open from 9:15 am to 6:00 pm

 Where: Alerus Center, Grand Forks, ND

Reserve your space by October 1, 2017

NDLA provides:

  • Space, table, and chair
  • Exposure to approximately 200 librarians who may want to purchase your books or schedule an author visit.
  • Wi-Fi access
  • Name, Book Title, and photo of book cover or author in the conference program (if received by August 23)
  • Invitation to the opening reception on Wednesday evening (light refreshments will be provided)


 Authors  provide:

  • Copies of any books you wish to sell at the event
  • Mechanism for book sales (cash box, card readers, etc.)

Call for Proposals: Proposals are now closed!

Has your library transformed itself from a little-used spot into a vibrant community hub? Have you transformed yourself from technophobe into a technology expert? Do you have a knack for transforming discarded books into works of art? We want to hear about it! Just submit a conference proposal!

BUT WAIT!!! This year, there are even more ways to share! In addition to the traditional conference session (50 minutes), there will be Hot Topics (10-minute presentations grouped into sessions), and a poster session (similar to science fair, posters set up all day Thursday with an assigned one-hour opportunity for discussion).

Keynote Speakers

V.J. Smith - Keynote Speaker – Thursday, October 5th – 8:00 AM – 9:15 AM

“The Richest Man in Town”

You will not want to miss author, V.J. Smith, as he headlines as one of the keynote speakers at the NDLA Annual Conference.  Known for his writing and speaking skills, Smith penned his book “The Richest Man in Town” after meeting a man named Marty who changed his life for the better at his local Walmart in Brookings, SD.

Marty had a profound impact on the people who went through his check-out line.  He became a legend in an unexpected place because he treated everybody with dignity, kindness and respect.  As V.J. says, “Marty was living proof that you don’t need money, power or title to make a difference in life.  You just need to care.”

Although you may consider reading his famed book before attending this event, it definitely isn’t necessary, as Smith’s message will challenge each listener to think about the interactions they have on a day to day basis while also inspiring them to be thankful.  His message will attract all individuals – you don’t need to be a librarian to get it!  For more information about V.J.  V.J. has been a professional speaker for almost two decades.  He has spoken to audiences throughout the United States and Canada.  V.J. is also a published author.

​Drawing on teachable moments encountered while working at a Fortune 100 company and a mid-size university, he peppers his speeches with anecdotes and stories to keep audiences fully engaged and motivated. 

He is genuine, sincere and relates to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

“Changed But Still Critical: Brick and Mortar Libraries in the Digital Age”

Today’s reality is that readers and information seekers are having increasingly less need to visit a physical library to meet their basic information needs. Digital information sources, readily accessed from classroom, home or mobile computing devices, are the choice of many learners and teachers. The “Net Generation” student increasingly prefers the visual and the virtual rather than the printed text. Why, many are asking, do we need a physical library when seemingly all resources can be obtained using an inexpensive netbook or tablet and a wireless network connection? How can these large physical spaces be re-purposed for greater educational impact? Doug Johnson’s keynote presentation, “Changed but Still Critical: Brick and Mortar Libraries in the Digital Age,” will address this issue.


 Doug Johnson is the Director of Technology for the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage (MN) Public Schools and has served as an adjunct faculty member of Minnesota State University. His teaching experience has included work in grades K-12 both here and in Saudi Arabia. He is the author of nine books including Teaching Outside the Lines: Developing Creativity in Every Learner, The Indispensable Librarian: Surviving and Thriving in School Libraries in the Information Age, and Learning Right from Wrong in the Digital Age. Doug’s Blue Skunk Blog averages over 50,000 visits a month, and his articles have appeared in over forty books and periodicals. Doug has conducted workshops and given presentations for over 200 organizations throughout the United States and internationally and has held a variety of leadership positions in state and national organizations, including ISTE and AASL.

The Nitty-Gritty of Transforming Your Library, Your Community…and Yourself

No one would argue that society and libraries have gone through major transformations in the past few years. From frequent technological leaps and new ways of interacting with each other to constantly evolving expectations of the role that a library should play in its community, it can seem daunting to stay abreast of everything you need to know and adapt. Take a breath, slow down, and with the right attitude, it is possible to transform how you work, how your library operates, and how your library is perceived. This interactive program will help you spot the trends you need to be aware of, adopt an attitude that embraces the uncertainty we all experience as librarians, and give you the tools you need to bring about positive change in your community, your workplace, and yourself.


John Spears has been Chief Librarian and CEO of the Pikes Peak Library District (PPLD) since early 2016.  He has nearly 20 years of experience working in urban, suburban, and rural libraries, and prior to coming to PPLD he served as Director of libraries in Salt Lake City (UT), Naperville (IL), and Joliet (IL).  John is the Past President of the Library Leadership and Management Association and is active in the Public Library Association as a contributing editor to Public Libraries and co-author of “Forward Thinking,” a column that explores trends in public librarianship. In addition to his work in the library profession, John is passionate about serving those experiencing homelessness and the arts, serving on the Governing Board of the Pikes Peak Continuum of Care and the Boards of the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association, Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region, and Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs.

Conference Credit

 To earn professional development credit for attending the conference, please go to the Valley City State University professional development website at http://www.vcsu.edu/extend/ and click on Registration and Course Availability. Choose the course named LMIS 2000: Libraries Transform, NDLA for one continuing education credit and complete the registration process.

To earn credit for attendance, you must:

  1. Register at the VCSU Extended Learning website
  2. Attend 15 hours of conference activities and host a session if possible
  3. Volunteer at the Conference as a Session Host or in another volunteer capacity. (Be sure to indicate in your reflection paper what your volunteer position entailed).
  4. Complete the Attendance Log
  5. Write a reflection paper
  6. Submit the Reflection Paper and Attendance Log
