Transgender Day of Remembrance: 

Join a Transgender Day of Remembrance event to gather and honor the lives of transgender individuals and reaffirm our commitment to a future of safety, acceptance, and resilience. Communities across North Dakota will host events on November 20th, inviting all allies and advocates to stand in solidarity:

  • Grand Forks: Christus Rex Lutheran Center, 6:00 PM
    (Hosted by Grand Forks Out and Proud)

  • Bismarck: Kennedy Center, 5:00 PM (Hosted by Dakota Outright / Qspace Bismarck)

  • Fargo: Pride Center, 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM (Hosted by Pride Collective and Community Center.

  • Faye Seidler, a suicide prevention advocate who specializes in LGBTQ+ populations, has additional information and resources on her website.


History

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998.

The first vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death. This important tradition has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance
. The week preceding TDOR is known as Transgender Awareness Week.
